Whether you are a declared Asian American Studies major or simply interested in learning more, we hope you will find some useful information on what we are, who we are, what we teach, and what some of our alumni have done with a degree in Asian American Studies. Asian American Studies AAS provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the historical and current experiences of persons of Asian ancestry. AAS faculty recognize that the term seeks to name a rapidly developing, complex, and heterogeneous population and that there is neither a single Asian American identity nor one community that comprises all Asian Americans. AAS brings together courses that address the artistic, historical, humanistic, political, and social dimensions of Asian Americans and is an appropriate course of study for students interested in a variety of concerns related to Asian Americans, including: artistic and cultural contributions; current social significance; historical experiences; immigration, intellectual, and policy issues; relationships with other social groups; and the construction of the notion of Asian American as it addresses important theoretical and practical issues.

Asian American Studies Program
Prospective and current undergraduate and graduate students may set up an appointment with the Asian American Studies Department Academic Advisor. Graduate course work centers on 11 required courses which lead to completion of the degree through two culminating venues: 1 thesis plan or 2 capstone plan. Faculty members bring a wide range of expertise and theoretical approaches to the graduate cohorts: from traditional disciplines of applied social sciences to emerging fields of digital media and informatics, with an emphasis on combining quantitative with qualitative methods, empirical and speculative inquiry, and on developing comparative and cross-cutting approaches to understanding of the range and complexity of Asian and Pacific Islander American experiences. Below is a sampling of the topics currently worked on by Asian American faculty in teaching and research: foundational concerns of ethnic studies, critical race theory, environmental justice, queer diaspora, food culture, social documentary, South-North relations in literature, civil engagement, and Asian American religion. Our faculty works closely with graduate students and favors participatory models of pedagogy that emphasize field work and collective efforts.
Our program is committed to promoting intercultural understanding and rigorous scholarship of Asian societies, cultures, histories, languages and migrations, as well as preparing students for success in a global environment. One of the greatest strengths of our Asian and Asian American studies program is its emphasis on interdisciplinary scholarship and collaboration among faculty and students. This sort of community building is reflected in the intense, creative and pioneering scholarship emerging from the department, and in how the program positions graduates well for entering into PhD programs or industries such as education, business, government, public policy, NGOs and arts and culture.
